Had my dad fly me in my grandfather’s Cessna 172 Skyhawk up to where my wife was working in northern Minnesota for the summer so my wife and I could drive back together. Fun day. Got to fly just above the clouds which was so cool.

Breaking through a cloud layer on the climb is one of life’s great pleasures. Especially when it’s grey and dingy below, and clear and a million above.
Just make sure you have the sunglasses ready!

As someone with a fear of heights, I’m torn between thoughts of the sheer beauty
and the twinge of fear at being so visibly that far off the ground.

I, too, have a bit of a fear of heights, yet for some odd reason I love flying. You’d think that the two would be connected, but somehow I can separate them completely. Now, get me on top of the house to do some roofing work and the problem is back in full-force.
And it can be rather situational. I was uncomfortable around the edge of this helicopter landing pad, but had no problem making love to my girlfriend in the middle of it one night...

I have read that acrophobia goes away once the physical connection to the ground is broken. Flying breaks that connection, so it’s not as much of a problem as many people think.

This is one of the reasons I want my instrument rating!

Sounds like fun. If the weather holds, I plan to fly this evening.
